Zanzibar Hotels

Mchanga Beach Lodge

The lodge is situated on Zanzibar’s east coast. The lodge offers simple but well-cared for and comfortable accommodation of good quality. It is a small establishment offering 6 Sea View lodge rooms and 2 Garden Suites. This ensures that your stay will be quiet and private, and the service personal.

Accommodation at Mchanga Beach Lodge

Sea View rooms are en-suite with shower and each has its own covered sand terrace with table and chairs, to which morning tea is brought. The rooms are furnished with locally crafted pieces in traditional Swahili style. Rooms feature air-conditioning, fans and AC. Naturally, the rooms all boast good sea views. The lodge’s Garden Suites are larger (sleeping up to four people) and feature two extra couches that can be used as beds. The suites also feature covered terraces that lead onto their beach terraces.

Food and Drink and Mchanga Beach lodge

The lodge’s restaurant is open-air, covered by a traditional makuti (leaf-thatched) roof. The restaurant serves breakfast lunch and dinner. The menu changes daily but there are always fresh fish, meat and vegetarian options available. Food comes highly recommended. As the lodge offers B&B, half-board and full-board options it is a flexible resort. However, the lodge is quite isolated meaning opting for half-board (at least) is a good idea.

The lodge also has a well stocked bar that serves beers, wines and spirits as well as hand made fruit juices and other soft drinks. This has a calm atmosphere and has been built around coconut palms, giving it a unique feel. Hotel staff speak English (though it may be broken) and are always happy to chat and the bartender will teach you how to play the traditional Swahili game of Bao. Drinks are not included and though not overly expensive the cost of these can add up.

Things to do at Mchanga Beach Lodge

As well as being located on a beach that offers good swimming all year round, the lodge offers a sea facing pool for low-tide swimming. This is a good size for the resort and is well kept and clean. The resort’s beach is an unspoilt example of the east-coast’s white sands. The hotel offers three beach bandas for guest use. These pockets of shade are very welcome on the sea front. There is also a mini boulles court at the resort, a curio shop and a reading and games corner to relax in. Internet connection is available for guest use.

While lazing on the beach and taking time to do nothing is what a holiday at Mchanga is really about, the area offers wonderful opportunities for keen snorkellers, would-be divers, boat lovers and cultural adventurers. The hotel can help advise you on activities and book courses at the PADI diving centre in nearby Matemwe. They will happily help arrange excursions to Stone Town, Spice Plantations, Prison Island or the Jozani Forest.

How to get to Mchanga Beach Lodge

The lodge is approximately an hour’s drive from Stone Town and the Airport. The Hotel will happily arrange transfers from either for a surcharge. If you wish to self-drive the lodge can also facilitate motorbike or car hire. The road is mostly tarmac, but gets rougher towards the journey’s end.

The poverty of the areas that one drives through to reach the island’s resorts can be disquieting. Locals may be seen hanging to the back of truck-come buses called daladalas and stray animals often roam the roads. Though the tourist industry with its luxury may seem hypocritical, the work of development funds and eco-tourism projects supported by resorts ensure that the locals reap some of the benefits of tourism’s financial gains.
